Norma Kamali parachute maxi coat and mermaid skirt. This collection is known to be one of her most famous from the 1970s made from real parachutes. There were various styles made; jumpsuits, trousers, jackets, coats, skirts, dresses, swimsuits and sack bags. They are made from nylon with cords to adjust the shapes and lengths. The coat has a round neck and a heavy front metal zip. The skirt hugs the hips and then flares out to create a voluminous skirt.
Norma has said that one day she went to Halston’s brownstone apartment with their mutual friend Victor Hugo. She was told to sit on the floor and close her eyes, then from the second floor Victor dropped a parachute on her head. He said, ‘I know you’ll do something amazing with that’.
